Rose Colored Memories

A small three by five piece of paper fluttered violently as the dirt filled breezes whipped around the blue jeep. Kylie stepped out from Gentry’s General Store, the wind twirling her strawberry blond hair. Her heart skipped a beat as she noticed the note flapping in the breeze. She quickly scanned the horizon then left to right, the only cars there were her own, the cashier Bonnie and the owner’s car. With a deep breath she walked over to the Jeep and plucked it from its confinements between the windshield and wiper blade. Without having to read the note in its entirety she knew the author, her blood ran cold. Crumpling the note; she hurriedly loaded the two brown bags into the passenger seat. Her cell phone rang, startling her, “Hello?”, Kylie answered. “Hey babe…what time you think your gonna be home?”, Rob questioned. “On my way now.”, Kylie said sighing relief. “Okay, will it be alrigh if I invite Troy from work over?”, Rob asked. Kylie was still unnerved and was focusing more on the note. “Hey!? You there?”, Rob inquired. “Oh, yeah, sorry….I am on my way, be there in a few.”, Kylie responded ending the phone call. After a few more tense moments she starts the vehicle, then heads home. The cabin is nestled just outside the outskirts of Preston, Idaho.

The drive is over an hour, it’s close to dusk when Rob saw the red cloud of dust behind the bright blue Jeep. He is seated on the steps of the porch, his elbows rested on his knees. He stood when she pulled into the parking area in front of the cabin. “That drive gets longer every time.”, Kylie said with an awkward smile. Rob is silent as he walked over to the passenger side and retrieved the bags. “you mad at me or something’?”, Kylie questioned. “No.”, Rob replied shortly. “Well, what is your problem?”, Kylie asked. “What’s yours?”, Rob snapped. “What do you mean?”, Kylie inquired with her eyebrow raised. “Let’s see, when I called you earlier you were short and you hung up on me….”, Rob replied. “I was distracted that’s all.”, Kylie replied avoiding direct eye contact. “Why are you lying’ to me Ky?”, Rob questioned setting the bags on the hood of the Jeep. “I’m not…”, Kylie said defensively. “You’re not huh? Then why don’t you look me in my eyes and tell me that you’re not lying then.”, Rob responded. Kylie attempted to make eye contact, “See, you are lying!”, Rob scolded. “why are you lying to me?”, he continued. “I am not.”, Kylie said trying to defend herself. “So what happened?”, Rob questioned. “Nothing.”, Kylie snipped as she snatched a bag off of the Jeep. “Kylie.”, Rob said taking her arm he spun her around. Kylie’s eyes were welled up, and her nose was red. “When I came out from Gentry’s there was a note on my windshield.”, Kylie responded. “A note? Like a ticket?”, Rob asked. “No, it was a note from Vincent.”, Kylie replied sobbing. “are you sure?”, Rob interrogated. “I know it was him…it was his handwriting.”, Kylie cried. “Well what did it say?”, Rob questioned. “It said ‘I always reckoned you to be a Country Girl.’”, Kylie said. “What the hell is that supposed to mean?”, Rob asked. “I don’t know….”, Kylie replied as she caught a glimpse of a red dust cloud rolling up the drive. Rob grabbed Kylie’s arm and pulls her into the house then into the basement. The sound of gravels sliding as the truck skidded to a stop sent cold chills down Kylie’s spine.
